American Idol' hopes end for dependable Doolittle
Friday, May 18, 2007
It's going to be the battle of the beat-boxer and the bubbly teen. But the dependable backup singer is heading home. Blake Lewis, 25, and Jordin Sparks, 17, advanced Wednesday night to next week's finale of "American Idol." The third semifinalist, Melinda Doolittle, 29, was eliminated. Almost 60 million votes were cast this week. Doolittle's departure drew a noticeable amount of boos from the studio audience. Throughout the season, she was the most-reliable singer, turning in polished performances week after week and displaying a humility that became her trademark. Doolittle left the show graciously, which came as no surprise. The singer who once seemed so shocked by every compliment bid good-bye with an assured, sexy encore of "I'm a Woman." "You were the most consistent all season, so be proud," said Randy Jackson in farewell. Now it's on to the "Idol" finale, which airs Tuesday and Wednesday.
