Nicolas Sarkozy - France's Presidential Election

Conservative Nicolas Sarkozy won France's presidential election on Sunday, beating his Socialist rival Segolene Royal by a comfortable margin and extending the right's 12-year grip on power.

The BBC reported Sarkozy had 53 percent of the vote, while Socialist Segolene Royal had 47 percent. The turnout was estimated at 85.5 percent, the highest for a French election in decades.
